Windows update on XP

Had to re-install windows. Got as far as the operating system and drivers then tried to run windows update.

It wont run - I believe the error number refers to timeout.

Tried disabling the firewall - same result.

Tried running their "fixit" thing.

Windows update is running just fine on my other PC that I had to re-build also due to board/cpu upgrades.

Any suggestions?

Wipe it all and start over....yet again?

There are at least 3 ways to start windows update:
Control panel
Start menu
Go into IE and select from the Microsoft.com

Do any of these work?

Presumeably automatic updates is turned on in the Security centre.
Also Windows Update itself may have to be updated for updates to proceed if you are doing a new install.
Is Service Pack 1 installed and the later service packs?
