Lazza

I'd start by Googling with a search string like... vista ie7 load problem
I got lots of promising looking hits.

Since this forum seems to have just deleted my first post I'm gonna try this again, bare with me if I don't include everything, just ask and I will be happy to provide any more info you need.

Basically I want to restore my computer to factory condition, and this is what I have done so far. The "restore to a previous date" did not work for me in terms of fixing the problems I have had. The problems at first mainly consisted of not being able to open newly installed programs from cd's.

Since that option didn't work, and I don't need any of the information on my computer, I wanted to start all over. Upon startup I go into the f8 menu, and choose the "repair" option. After selecting this option it takes me to the login screen. IT WILL NOT LET ME USE THIS OPTION. I have tried this multiple times but the computer fails to load the next screen and takes me to login.

Next I read that re-installing Vista will overwrite all the old files. Since I have all the original cd's that came with my computer (Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop) I tried this. However, I saved the new OS to my D: drive, consequently now my D: drive is full, and my C: still contains all my old files and I cannot access them.

I would prefer to just start fresh with empty hard drives, I tried re-formatting them but that did not work either, as they both contain OS software Vista will not let me do this.

Basically what I am trying to ask is, how do I turn my computer back to factory condition when the F8 option fails?

Thanks for any help you provide!

Perhaps this solution would resolve your problem:

I presume you can boot from the Dell Media CD.

So you want to start completely fresh? Ok, you can't do it when you are running the machine. It's like trying to pull the rug away but you are standing on the rug.

1. The classic way is for DIY machines or desktop machines - they used to come with one Windows CD (in your case Vista) and one or more driver CDs for the motherboard, printer, etc... You boot with the Windows CD, goes through interview process of what country settings, etc... and completes. But Vista may not recognise all your hardware, so you next run the Vista as normal and install your drivers.

2. Next, for non DIY machines, brand name machines, they have done all that work for you. They come with a specific recovery set of DVD or CD. You shove in the first one, interview asks you "are you sure?", you answer and you sit back and your machine is built in 15mins to half an hour. No further interview questions. All ready.

3. Next in the evolution is these notebooks. They come with a hidden manufacturer's partition. When you first start the machine, it asks for a second or so, whether you want to recover to factory condition, before Windows starts fully. If you say yes or press the correct key, they ask again for confirmation, then they unpack all their goods from the manufacturer's partition on the hard disk, and you have a fresh install.
