gmail file associations

Postby dr daf » Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:57 am

Recently transferred my wife's stuff from her vista (sigh) laptop to a win7 desktop. All went well. One small niggle is that clicking links in gmail asks for a file association to be created or an email program to be installed. It is easy enough to just copy the email address and go to compose in gmail, but a one click solution would please her. Had a look at the file association thing, but don't know what to use. Using Firefox and win7 pro.

thanks for any help.

Dr Daf

Navigate to Control Panel --> Programs --> Default Programs and then define whatever missing associations you need. For email to work when you click on an email address you have to have an email client installed. Thunderbird is free and integrates nicely with GMail. There is also a portable app version of Thunderbird, which I use and recommend. The beauty of portable apps is that they leave your registry alone.

Thanks AB; I suspected we'd have to do that; have used Tbird for years but had not set it up on new machine.

There is an evolution from desktop client based email - Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, to web based email clientsv gmail, hotmail, yahoo mail. In this evolution, we want a url that is prefixed with mailto: to start the relevant email client.

There are several unofficial email redirectors.

Thanks anandasim.
I tried the suggestions on that link in both Firefox and IE to no avail - computer still wants desktop email. I'll maybe try it on a different machine later.

Success! Thank you once again, anandasim.
The third link provided the info that I had not grasped previously:
the required file associations are found in Firefox>Tools or Preferences>Applications>mailto.
Seems like the gmail option was there all along but I didn't know where to find it.

I'm reminded of this one:

Tried it long ago, left it....
