XP Freezes When AntiVirus Installed

Postby gmulhall » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:29 pm

Hi,

I recently purchased a Linksys wireless router and have dynamic IP addressing turned on. My PC is wired but the remaining PC's connect wirelessely. I also have Malwarebytes installed. I find that if I install an antivirus like Avast or MS Security essentials as well, my PC freezes. If I remove the antivirus all works OK. I suspect there antivirus programs are trying to operate before the dynamic IP addressing is resolved and freezing up. The other PC's don't experience the problem.

Any ideas ?

I doubt it is a network issue as you describe, but may be Malwarebytes not playing nicely with the AV.
Do you have anything else installed?
Have you scanned for viruses before installing? Panda Software do an online scan.

Hi gmulhall,

If you have installed the free version of MalwareBytes it doesn't run with realtime protection.
In this case the only file that appears to autorun on startup is the Malwarebytes shell extension, mbamext.dll.
I am not sure why this would cause any problems.

If you have the paid-for version of Malwarebytes you could try turning off the realtime protection to see if this helps.

Hi & Thanks,

I have the paid version of Malware Bytes and there are no issues with it starting with windows. When I add an antivurus that starts before Malwarebytes and I get the freezing. I'll uninstall MB and install MS Internet Essentials and see where I get. I tried scanning with Panda - but that started looping when it got to the disc images and only got 39% done. It reported a few minor adware items - but nothing serioius. MB does not find any issues with the PC.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Well uninstalling Malwarebytes and then installing MS Sec Essentials resolved the problem. I've restarted 3 time with only MS SE running and not had the issue. This is a real pity as I've previously found Malwarebyte very useful - and why I purchased it. I've run a quick scan using MS SE. Will now run a full scan and see what it finds.

Thanks for the help !!

Hi,

After checking the Malwarebyte forum they have a resolution to the problem

- http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.ph ... ntry181018

Which means I'm now running both programs and feeling far safer.
