Any recommendation on WiFi ADSL modem-router?

Postby bladesmaster » Tue Aug 28, 2012 3:35 pm

I am looking to upgrade or buy a new modem-router for Broadband internet connection.

I have had TPLINK modem-router for 3 years now (almost 4). And lately there has been the signals from router to (desktop) PC have deteriorated that I lose connection with the router. I don't have that sort of problem with my notebook.

I need something more reliable and robust, not with just Broadband, but also with WLAN networking. Something that is easy to make secure.

Though, I would more often use wireless, I would like the modem/router to have some gigabit ports for wired networking. At least once a month, some of my friends and brother-in-law would come over for gaming (but sometimes at one of the friend's houses for gaming).

Can anyone recommend brand and model?

I don't mind spending a bit more for robust and reliable modem/router, with good range and signals, in both networking and internet connection.

Some time ago I upgraded to Optus fast cable (100Mb downloads) and was motivated to get a decent router while I was at it. I did some research on Whirlpool and ended up buying an Asus RT-N56U. It' s very good and in particular the wireless connection is fast and reaches all corners of the house. It also has gigabit Ethernet ports.

Thanks, aussieboykie. I'll look at this model.

Is it very secure?

I forgot to also mention. Since I wish to get 802.11n wireless modem/router, I'll need a new wireless USB adapter (for my PC). My notebook already have N wireless built-in.

Can you recommend any?

I can't specifically recommend a wireless adapter since all my devices are already "N" and I have never needed to buy one. However there are plenty to choose from and whatever router you go for will likely have a fully compatible adapter from the same manufacturer. I bought my Asus router from http://www.pccasegear.com in Melbourne. Shipped to Sydney the next day. They have a wide range of all sorts of PC gear.
