Email client

Postby magna05 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 10:34 pm

Hi,

Windows 7 does no longer include an email client.

Can Outlook Express be downloaded separately?

If not I'd like recommendations for some other POP3 email clients.

I'm not interested in Web based ones such as Fastmail, Yahoo or Gmail etc.

Thanks,

Thunderbird is the best of the free email clients in my opinion. It's also available as a portable app which can be run off a USB stick.

I would want:

a. complete portability of the program so I am not limited to one precious machine
b. exact knowledge of where my email data is instead of the Outlook Express way of saving the message store in some user profile hive of folders
c. ease of copying the whole program and all the data for backup
d. ease of program updates

I agree with AB that Portable Thunderbird is the best solution.

Microsoft still provides an email client - but they moved these things away from the Windows distribution DVD to Windows Live website - the downloads are free and the program is called Windows Live Mail. It looks more modern in aesthetic than Outlook Express but suffers the issue of locking you down to one specific PC

If you are using a portable email client on a USB stick it would be wise to have it backed up or synchronised somewhere else in case the drive fails or is lost or the data base becomes corrupt.

One possibility is to use the free-for-personal-use Mailstore Home for archiving your emails.

Mailstore Home is also available in a Portable version (Beta).

Um, no need to have another program backing up another program. Thunderbird Portable can be run from the hard disk or from USB drive. Regularly copy the whole Portable Thunderbird folder - and make as many copies as you want or you can bear. Created date names folders like 20110806TBird and copy the whole box and dice into them

I agree. But what I meant is that as an archiving and backup application Mailstore has additional advantages if you want them.
It can archive emails from different email sources if you need, such as internet, POP and IMAP.
It also has powerful seach features and export functions. The export function can be a lifesaver when moving emails to a different email client a task often fraught with difficulty.
