End of an era
I hadn't realised I'd been doing the Computer Help segment on ABC Radio for quite so long - 12 years or so - until Peter Moon, Jon Faine and I started reminiscing today, during what was the farewell show.
Who knows how many questions Peter and I have tried to answer over those years? Clearly it's a lot, and frankly I'm relieved not to have to race in to the studio on Thursday mornings, never knowing what I'm going to be asked to talk about or attempt to solve.
Nevertheless, I am thinking of trying to set up some sort of podcast equivalent, so stay tuned.

Charles - I usually listen to computer help on Thursdays (being in IT myself I enjoy hearing someone else having to solve problems), but I missed it this morning.
I take it from what you are saying it will no longer be a segment on Jon's show?

Rarely missed the computer segment, Charles. I'm still in a bit of shock as I didn't see the end coming. I'll miss your kindly voice and the useful information. If it ever crosses your mind to do the same to "Bleeding Edge", please give us some notice. Two shocks in 12 months would be too much!!!!! Keep well.

Thank you Charles for your efforts over the years on our ABC, greatly appreciated. I missed the show but I do hope you signed off on YOUR ABC with a shameless plug for all things that are Bleeding Edge!!!

Thanks Charles for a segment that infuriated me (as an IT Manager (maybe people who can't work computers shouldn't own computers (thank goodness they don't have chainsaws!))) and impressed me with the patience you and Peter had for the segment. (and heck, I learnt a few things too).
My staff will be happy that I'm no longer yelling "Idiot" down the office corridor. (at your caller, not at you and PM).

Ditto to all the above. I have enjoyed the segment and was very cross when the ABC stopped making it available on its website. I will miss it and so encourage you to pursue the podcasting idea (or similar). A lot of the callers asked for basic advice and it didn't hurt the more experienced to be reminded of the basics.

Thanks Charles for many years of wonderful listening. When you started on Jon Faine I think I'd just bought a proper windows and internet capable computer with all of 500mhz of grunt and 64MB of memory. Listening to you and reading your columns taught me a lot and gave me many ideas as well. These days I admire the patience you and Peter still show with the newbies, one doesn't dare think how many times the words adaware and zone alarm have passed your lips.
At the same time your ability to keep on top of the increasingly complex and obscure problems has been marvellous. I think the time either you or Peter got a call from someone who half way through your answer said, "oh, no, my tech support group here have already tried that" took the biscuit.
May your blogs carry on the grand tradition for many years to come.

I've appreciated learning from the segments I've heard at times on the radio. Didn't realize it had come to an end. I'm glad I can log in here at times to catch up on the latest important developments. Thanks Charles and all the people who support you.

I only started listening this year. I thought all three personalities in the show very listenable and interesting unlike many of the non talkback American podcasts which are culturally different.
It is sad to see this end - I'm not too sure that non talkback podcasts can capture the immediacy (Charles will call it white knuckle pressure of giving good replies) that 774 had.
Aunty isn't the only AM talkback in town and that's worth noting - I think the Charles and Peter Moon combo could be saleable to other stations (rather like Pomeranz and Stratton). Podcast recordings of live phoneins would be markedly more interesting than the self indulgent ramblings of more typical of TWIT or Lockergnome. IMHO

C.W, there is some confusion in the ABC Guestbook as to whether you and Peter walked or were pushed. Will you enlighten us as to which is correct, please?

I'd also like C.W. to comment on what happened.
This morning a woman rang John Faine and voiced her concerns over the way the ABC deal with their presenters and that she wanted the Computer Help segment to continue, with new presenters if Charles and Peter were unable to continue.
John Faine replied that "frankly, we felt the Computer Help was becoming repetative". I don't see how John can use repetition as a reason to cut a popular segment, on that basis he would also have to cut the Legal Help segment with David Whiting, because of all the repetative calls about wills and fencing disputes, which John and David regularly acknowlege and make a running jokes about !
It looks to like Johns bias against computers had a lot to do with the computer help segment being cut.
